Besides tall apartment buildings, they had all the modern infrastructure: school, town hall, community center, clubhouse, bathhouse, swimming pool, cinema, rooftop gardens and of course a pachinko parlour. It was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage site in July 2015. Typically they limit each visit to 1-hour per tour group. It would have been so cool!
Needless to say, as an eager photographer and urban explorer, I was giddy with delight at both being featured in the final documentary as an amateur historian, and the chance to explore more of the nooks and crannies on the island that I had missed on my first exploration.
It's possible that future storms may cause further destruction, also affecting what can be viewed by visitors.
They had many tall building to support the amount of people, but it was still crowded. For many years, a plan was in the works to use the island as a rubbish dump – to fill the mine shafts with trash, then pile on refuse until the entire island was buried. The island was abandoned 40 years ago and after 40 years of rough weather and typhoons, the island is now in this condition.
Soon as we were allowed to board, I made a beeline for the top deck to get unobstructed views of the island.
The guided tour takes visitors along a set route on elevated walkways, which pass near a number of the best sites. Back in 2015, on one of my first trips to Japan, I tried to go to Gunkanjima, the “James Bond” island off the coast of Nagasaki. From a certain angle, the island and its buildings really does look like a battleship. That’s if you’re lucky, considering that sometimes your Hashima island tour won’t be able to disembark if the water is too rough.

You get to spend about an hour on the island and are only allowed to walk within a fenced off strip about 1/4 of the island’s circumference. The buildings are very dilapidated and can fall at any given moment. With the imperative verb form “maka*se*”, it is most likely saying either “Leave this island to rot.” or expressing the hope that the island is left to rot. Landing on Gunkanjima is said to be possible only on about 100 days per year and is most difficult between November and March. Gunkanjima was the perfect bond villain lair for Skyfall. From what I gather, the show has previously aired in 2011, but it might still well be running on Sky. Get off at Ourakaigandori Street station.
