You bring up an interesting topic especially with Gogol, more often than not Dostoevsky’s Notes from the underground is chosen, yet it is difficult to assess the work through your use of lexical definitions. What starts off as amusing, peculiar and a bit hilarious segues into a lonely sadness.
Very interesting. Believing himself in Spain, waiting for the Spanish deputies to arrive, he then decides that Spain and China are in fact the same country. As he said in his first sight of her, just after being a beast of a civil servant himself, “A footman opened the carriage door and out she fluttered, just like a little bird.” Nothing comes of this love he feels for her; Sophie is effectively unaware of him.

The Director takes a much more passive role in affecting Poprishchin. Having moved to Saint Petersburg, Gogol was struck by deep social contradictions and tragic catastrophes. Characters aren’t simply mad for no reason, but whether or not they elucidate truths or reality to the reader is debatable.

His own madness might stem from his inability reconcile his desire to earn rank and the meaningless of rank. Therefore, we can refrain from labeling them “mad,” and we should not regard Poprishchin’s diary entries as mere ramblings. We must assume that no matter how Poprishchin attains the information, through dog- written letters or not, he remains unable to reconcile the “true” reality contained in the letters with his own notions of reality. Poprishchin is torn between knowing that attaining rank means nothing and believing that having a greater rank will bring him a better life.
He seems to be acknowledging the fact that his attempt to be more than society has made him out to be has failed, and his future is bleak.

In 1968 Alexander Belinsky directed a TV adaptation of the story for the Leningrad TV, starring Yevgeni Lebedev as Poprishchin. “Madness” and “insanity” are often used as synonyms, but “insanity” is better used as a legal term, not a medical one. Power and dignity are the two most significant traits that Poprishchin fantasizes about. Written in 1834, the story contains one of the earliest descriptions of schizophrenia, by turns bizarre, funny and sad. Nevertheless, he is deemed insane by the establishment and locked up in an asylum by the story’s end. The hard school of life, which Gogol had gone through in his early career, trained him for creation of Nose, Diary of a Madman, Portrait, The Overcoat, and other narrations. Poprishchin claims that the dog is lying and even accuses his boss, the section chief, of orchestrating the lies.

His destruction of the letter evidences his insanity by symbolizing his release of reality.
This trip is actually an appearance of his imagination that has been translated from being maltreated in an insane asylum. The arbitrariness of the social order affects him greatly, as the link between his rank and his identity unravels.

After reading Lu Xun and Gogol’s “Diary of a Madman”, it is apparent that the writing design and the option of themes dealt with in Lu Xun’s “Diary of a Madman” are affected by Gogol’s “Diary of a Madman”, but Lu Xun provides the story in a more permeating and fancy way to emphasize the themes. The book was published in multiple languages including English, consists of 84 pages and is available in Paperback format.
Diary of a Madman essays are academic essays for citation.
